Jayden returns home more broken than when he left, and Lizbeth attempts to heal him. When she can't,she seeks refuge with Dusty, a Vietnam veteran who lives in her friend’s basement. Dusty's words both inspire and haunt her. When Dusty dies, homeless, Lizbeth delves into a dark place gripped by paranoia, fear, and a loathing for an unjust society that denigrates the elderly and the disabled; but before she can see the “good people” to which Dusty refers, and tell their story, she has to face her own biases and learn how to forgive.

Brown wrote a touching, poignant story about a young woman who finally grows up and finds herself with the help of an aging Nam vet and a young man carrying his own burdens from childhood. Despite heartbreak and loss of a husband and innocence, the girl becomes a caring, independent, and loving woman. That is a journey everyone faces, but Brown's protagonist comes out at the end stronger and wiser.
