Kirkus Reviews
Detective Inspector Joseph Rafferty's brief flirtation with a dating service is complicated when the first two ladies to take his fancy turn up dead the morning after. As his longtime partner Dafyd Llewellyn honeymoons with Rafferty's cousin Maureen, the senior member of the team (Absolute Poison, 2003, etc.) ponders his own barren domestic landscape. Despite major misgivings, he applies for membership at Caroline Durwand's Made in Heaven, designed to provide discreet introductions among Elmhurst's professional elite. Of course, he can't apply in his own name, not with ever-vigilant Ma Rafferty nosing about, so he borrows a passport from his realtor cousin Jerry Kelly, who's changed his name to Nigel Blythe. It's as Nigel that he meets Jenny Warburton, who in spite of the ten years' difference in their ages likes him well enough to blow off alternate suitors Guy Cranston and Lancelot Bliss at his first party in the Durwand home. And it's Nigel that Estelle Meredith allows to monopolize her conversation at a second party at the Elmhurst Hotel. So, naturally, when Jenny and Estelle's slashed bodies are discovered near the party venues, it's Nigel who's the prime suspect. And when investigating officer Harry Simpson goes on the sick list, Rafferty inherits a case so complex he ends up wondering if perhaps he isn't guilty after all. Evans brings wit and insight to this tale of looking for love in all the wrong places.
