Editorial Reviews

Richard B. Gilbert
Seldom have I read a book that exudes such comfort, such an embrace of genuine insight, care and support....The book is story, compassion and direction, determined to be a friend without being another futile attempt at how-to. The book's gift, and it is a rich treasure for the reader, is that it embraces who we are....

Dying: A Book of Comfort would make a thoughtful gift for a family or individual coping with terminal illness, someone who is grieving, or people who work with the dying or bereaved. My copy has already become dog-eared and annotated....

When you don't know what to say

This lovely, comforting book is helpful not only for people who have suffered a death, but also for anyone who wants to express sympathy and concern. I've found it especially helpful when I want to reach out to colleagues and others whom I care about but don't know very well. The readings are so varied that I can be sure every recipient will find something appropriate.

A Wonderful Gift for a Grieving Heart

When you lose a loved one, you need comfort. You need the wisdom of those who have already walked this painful, treacherous path. Pat McNees has collected writings so varied, they offer a loving hand for every kind of loss. This book is a classic.

    A profoundly helpful book.

We gave all of the volunteers at our hospice a copy of this book, after an associate at the local hospital brought it to our attention. The selections are beautifully chosen, thoughtfully arranged, and provide solace and insight for the patient who is dying, for the caregivers, and for the survivors. The selections help our volunteers and the people they work with understand that grief, as consuming as it is, isn't all bad and doesn't last forever--that healing does come. What's nice about the book is that it is ecumenical: it helps whether you have religious beliefs or not. That's rare.
