E-mails From Shiloby Susan J. Lustig

There is more to being a dog than looking cute, chasing squirrels or figuring out how to get along with the resident cat - as the "mom" of Shilo, a rescued Golden Retriever, discovers when she uncovers a mysterious folder in her computer filled with nearly two years' worth of e-mails - from Shilo to Max, her sister's dog.
We see this world through his eyes and interpreted through his canine sensibilities. Shilo's underlying worry is that perhaps, like his first family, his new family may not want him anymore, that they too could suddenly disappear one day. This emotional experience gives his world a sympathetic perspective and forces him to deal with some very tough issues of his own. It is his surprising discussions with his friend, sage and mentor, a Basset Hound named Sammy that gives Shilo's stories a mysterious twist. Sammy reveals the lore and history of the wolf and the wisdom they passed along throughout the ages to the dog world. As a student philosopher, Shilo endeavors to comprehend life as he lives it with his family and friends and ventures to resolve the true meaning of who he is. As an explorer, he is curious yet mystified by his experiences: human behavior, emotions, music, snow, death, Christmas trees, TV and always...cats. "E-mails from Shilo" starts as a story about an amiable, curious, and very confused dog - and ends up an inspiring adventure for humans of all ages. It is a tale of self-discovery, responsibility, companionship, humor, friendship and love. This lovely book is filled with more than 50 illustrations.

What a heartwarming and gratifying book. I found myself laughing at one point and crying the next ¿ all the time wanting more. At one point, without giving too much away, Shilo unearths his roots back to the wolf. This was an extraordinary moment in his story that still gives me chills. As it turns out, Shilo is a very skillful docent 'and philosopher' as he carefully guides the reader through his captivating and enchanting life. This book was well worth every one of my discretionary dollars. If you love dogs and a good story you can¿t miss with this one. I give it two ¿dewclaws up¿ and look forward to a Shilo book-signing event near me.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. This book is a winner on multiple levels. It¿s short, sweet, has lots of priceless photos and makes for great reading, over and over again. The premise is very clever and laugh-out-loud funny. While this book is entertaining, I enjoyed it¿s softer, more poignant side as well. Hope to hear from this team again with more pet antics and adventures.
I loved reading this book of e-mails written by a golden retriever named Shilo. The best part of it for me is the dog's-eye-view of living with humans. The e-mail about Christmas was the funniest, although the 'big tub' stories were great, too. I highly reccommend this book. It makes a good gift, too.
