Overview

The celebrated popular music scholar presents an intimate portrait of The Boss and his legendary band

Bruce Springsteen fans know that the band makes the man, which is why millions of people have jammed stadiums and arenas to see The Boss play countless shows with his incredible E Street Band. In this revelatory and unapologetic biography, respected music scholar Clinton Heylin turns a critical eye towards Springsteen’s early days, capturing this classic phase of his career and his rise from Asbury Park hood rat to global rock star. Using long-buried archival recordings and bootlegs, Heylin expertly traces Springsteen’s creative process as a songwriter and performer and illuminates the roles of the E Street Band members in creating their distinctive sound. Highly nuanced and as fiery as Springsteen himself, E Street Shuffle offers the most revealing portrait yet written on this American icon.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Narrator Dan John Miller handles the work admirably. Although there's nothing of New Jersey in his intonations, his cadence is laconically street-savvy, as one might imagine of the various club owners and record executives whom Springsteen encountered." —AudioFile

Don't buy this book!! I was looking forward to it because Heylin has written a great biography of Dylan ( Behind the Shades), but this book he seems to be pushing an agenda. I can sum the book up thusly: "Bruce takes too long to make albums, over thinks the songs and reworks them too much And then leaves the best ones off of the released album." There, I just saved you 382 pages of reading. Read the book " Bruce" by Peter Ames Carlin instead. That book is well researched and offers new information that is unbiased.

Darkness -vs- Glory days! This book just delves into the BUSINESS of the music. If you are looking to read about the relationships among band members, forgetaboutit! What is each individual song about and how did it relate to each album. Maybe too much for some. Could have been edited better. Still - LOTS to learn here!

Totally agree with Dave from Buffalo. What a disappointment. The Carlin book was 5-star and this was just awful. I was also expecting, based on the name and cover shot, more about Bruce & his relationship with the band members. But this was nothing of the sort. Steer clear Bruce fans.
