From their origin and rise to fame, to the music, the recording sessions, the fights, the tours, the parties afterward and the hangovers that followed, Ben Fong-Torres covers it all backed by deft research, first-hand interviews, and a collection of fantastic photographs from some of the best rock photographers in the business.

In the course of 40 years, the Eagles changed line-ups five times, split up twice, recorded seven highly successful albums, toured the world multiple times, released the top-selling rock album in American history, and sued each other. Their story is a uniquely American journey, and their legacy is assured for decades to come.

This unauthorized book is at least the third Eagles title written by past band members or outsiders since 2009. Fong-Torres (Grateful Dead Scrapbook) falls into the latter category, having been a senior editor at Rolling Stone, one of the band's frequent media targets. Fong-Torres reminds readers about his background throughout this handsome, condensed history of one of rock's most successful and contentious bands, published to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Eagles' formation in 1971. Artistically and commercially triumphant almost immediately, with a smooth blend of California rock and country, the Eagles released six studio albums between 1972 and 1979, changed lineups multiple times, sued each other, split up, and reunited—for now, at least. Fong-Torres, who covered the band regularly for Rolling Stone during their glory years, touches on all phases of the band's ugly and complicated career, most effectively chronicling the Hell Freezes Over reunion and ongoing touring. Fair in his critical assessments and laudable for most of his choices regarding dozens of classic photographs, the author nevertheless gets some easy facts wrong. (Oct.)

Meet the Author

Ben Fong-Torres is one of America’s premier rock journalists. He was senior staff at Rolling Stone from its 8th issue in 1968 through 1982, interviewing Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Marvin Gaye, and many more top artists. He has published six books including The Doors By The Doors (written with the band) and The Hits Just Keep on Coming (a history of Top 40 radio). He has been a contributing editor to Parade magazine, and serves as a music editor for the web-based TONEAudio. Since July 2005, he has written the bi-weekly column “Radio Waves” in the San Francisco Chronicle Sunday Datebook. He lives in San Francisco. Please visit him at benfongtorres.com.
