Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Each book in the "Welcome to the World of Animals" series describes the animal in terms of wonder at what it can do and how it functions in its environment. While there are over sixty kinds of eagles worldwide, there are only two kinds found in North America. Short chapters tell where these two species of eagles, the bald and the golden, can be found, what they eat, how they communicate, what babies are like, and how they spend time. Unfortunately, the book assumes that most bald eagles live in the northwest coastal area while the golden eagle is found in Canada and the western U.S. But in field guides, both eagles are shown in winter or summer ranges, and as found pretty much everywhere in the U.S. and Canada. A report writer would easily locate habitats and other relevant features, given the functional index and glossary of this 32-page book. Interesting sidebars detail, among other things, how far an eagle might fly, an old Greek story, and the disproportionately large nests eagles build. Well-captioned close-up photographs picture various stages of eagle growth but only a quarter of them deal with golden eagles while the rest favor the bald eagle. A serviceable offering in the series. 2003 (orig. 1998), Gareth Stevens,
