Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Peg Glisson
These great birds of prey are divided into four groups defined by their behavior or characteristics. Natural and man-made changes to the environment have made it difficult for all birds to adapt and survive; of the 59 subspecies of eagles, many are in danger of extinction. Haywood focuses on Bald Eagles, Harpy Eagles, Philippine Eagles, White-Tailed Sear Eagles, Madagascar Eagles, Palla's Fish Eagles, and Spanish Imperial Eagles, providing some information on the physical attributes, feeding habits, causes of concern, and efforts to conserve their populations, some of which are more successful than others. A glossary, sharp, close-up photographs, and an occasional sidebar help readers glean more information. Age-appropriate books and websites and organizations involved in conservation will be useful for those wanting to know more. Maps of each eagle's habitat would have been helpful. Current and informative, this entry in the "Endangered!" Series will appeal both to browsers and those doing research. Reviewer: Peg Glisson
