Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Judith A. Hayn
Well-written in an easily accessible style, these two texts are part of a twelve-volume set focusing on the human body. Each begins with the anatomy of the system under discussion followed by a detailed examination of the physiology of the organ. In the first text, the ear, nose, and throat are approached in terms of diseases, communication disorders, disorders of the nose and throat, and approaches to evaluating these disorders. The editor includes contemporary areas of genetic research that offer hope for new treatments and/or disease prevention, along with the ethical dilemmas these might generate. The second text focuses on the kidneys and renal system, and follows a similar organizational structure by presenting the function, its physiology, common disorders, and then evaluation and treatment. A complete understanding of the renal system continues to elude scientists, but additional research in biochemistry, genetics, and biotechnology offers future solutions that could solve some of the more complex disorders. A discussion of recent research results adds to the immediacy of the material in each text. The illustrations, diagrams, and photos add to the readability of the material. Other topics in additional volumes include the endocrine system, skin and connective tissue, the reproductive system, the eye and others. Teens seeking additional information about human anatomy will find these books understandable, and they will add clarity to difficult concepts perhaps only mentioned in classroom textbooks. The set would be a valuable addition for school and public library collections. (The Human Body) Reviewer: Judith A. Hayn
