Children's Literature
Among the common maladies that young children face, earaches have to be at the top of the list. One of the explanations given in the book is that the length of the Eustachian tube in young children is shorter than the one adults have and therefore more susceptible to blockage and infection. In this title, as in the others in the "Rookie Read-About Health" series, a straightforward text explains how the ear is constructed and what may cause an earache. The pictures have a little bit of the gross factor which will not hurt at all. The picture of an infected ear and the one of white blood cells attacking a germ look like something from a science-fiction movie. The basic information emphasizes the need for kids to wash their hands with soap and water to reduce infections. There is a picture glossary entitled "Words You Know," an index, and a brief blurb about the author. 2003, Children's Press/Scholastic, Ages 4 to 7.

K-Gr 2-In an effort to be approachable and conversational, the author sacrifices fact in exchange for cuteness in all three books. And in Pinkeye, if the simplistic text doesn't turn children off, the up-close-and-personal color photo of pinkeye (complete with dripping pus) will. The text on some pages is as insipid as, "Good morning, bright eyes!" or "Do you hear?" There just isn't enough information included in these books to make purchase worthwhile, and although they are intended to be for beginning readers, even children who suffer from these conditions will find very little to reassure or instruct them.-Christine A.
