Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
It started out as a new adventure, full of the unknown and excitement. Louis Cabot and his parents were on their way to San Francisco, California. Louis' father, Dr. Cabot, has been hired to work at a local hospital in this young town. The day after their ship docks, all of San Francisco awakens to the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906, and Louis Cabot and his mother and father are needed more than ever. This middle reader is a part of the "Half and Half" series, half of the book containing a story and the other half containing factual information. The story helps to bring the events of the San Francisco earthquake alive for the reader in a more personal way, rather than just doling out facts. Experiencing the earthquake through the eyes of Louis paves the way for the second half of the book that is packed full of information about earthquakes, from explaining tectonic plates to showing the effects of the different earthquake magnitudes. Teachers and parents will find the directions to create a model for simulating an earthquake to be an excellent educational activity. A quiz is provided at the back of the book that teachers/homeschoolers may also find useful. Reviewer: Justina Engebretson
