Overview

New York Times best-selling author and animal rights advocate Patrick McDonnell's Mutts "is up there with Peanuts, Pogo, Krazy Kat, and Calvin and Hobbes—cartoons that are smart and funny, brilliantly drawn and full of heart" according to Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons.

Always striking a delicate balance between lighthearted fun and responsible social commentary, Patrick McDonnell's award-winning Mutts has been recognized by critics and popular press alike for its distinctive style, heartwarming humor, and strong yet nonpreachy stance on important issues such as responsible pet ownership, animal advocacy and adoption, and the sanctity of all life.

Sketched in McDonnell's distinctive style, this emotive Mutts collection follows the day-to-day exploits of cat and dog duo Mooch and Earl. Whether they are contemplating the cosmos or curling in for a much-needed nap, these two lighthearted pals remind us of the simple pleasures that make life so grand.

Earl &and Mooch contains nearly a year's worth of colored Sunday strips, along with black-and-white daily strips that mingle with impromptu splash pages highlighting McDonnell's imaginative artwork.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3 Up—Beginning with New Year's Day and traveling through the seasons to the next New Year's Eve, this volume collects a solid year of the "Mutts" daily newspaper strip, featuring the main cat and dog characters. Drawn in a minimalist style with slightly enlarged lettering, the essential structure follows an almost vaudevillian gag format, with the jokes either relying on simple plays on words or easily comestible ideas. The author makes a few contemporary references to environmentalism—and takes a swipe at the current economy—and correctly guesses that his readers might be interested in animal humane issues, dedicating a couple of weeks to animal rescue awareness. Largely this is very much not a sum of its parts, but merely a collection of them. That said, the strip has been around for 16 years, with a loyal following and a number of spin-off children's books, most recently Wag! (Little, Brown, 2009), and will likely find a coterie of readers.—Benjamin Russell, Belmont High School, NH
