Earl Warren

Overview

Earl Warren, the son of Scandinavian immigrants, was never the best student. But he worked hard, and his diligence served him well as a young lawyer. He rose to prominence as a no-nonsense, tough-on-crime prosecutor, then later as a Republican governor of California.

When President Dwight D. Eisenhower picked Warren to be chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, it was with the expectation that Warren would be a conservative voice on the court. But Warren surprised the president...

But Warren surprised the president and the nation by producing a streak of controversial, liberal opinions. Warren outraged conservatives by ending segregation in schools and public places, and standing up for the rights of accused criminals. He made sure that every citizen's vote counted, and struck down laws banning marriage between people of different races. By the time Warren's term on the court ended sixteen years later, the country's social and legal landscape was forever changed.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Kristin Fletcher-Spear
These two biographies of Supreme Court Chief Justices Earl Warren and John Marshall follow similar formats: each begins with a brief look at the childhood of the Justice, and then focuses on their adult careers. The bulk of the chapters highlight their careers before their roles as Chief Justices on the Supreme Court; then the major court cases that were decided during their respective tenures on the Supreme Court. The last chapter describes their final years. Each book concludes with a section on selected court cases, a timeline, sources, bibliography, web sites, and an index. The series offers a range of highlighted justices who have made landmark historical decisions that continue to affect us today. These slim biographies are formatted to be easy to read. There are plenty of colored illustrations throughout the chapters. Earl Warren includes callout sections with pieces from his memoirs, interviews, and other primary texts. The biographies are well-researched with their sources cited. The series is a perfect collection to offer teens for biography projects, but the question is how many teens would choose to read about Supreme Court Justices, even for school assignments. The bottom line is these are definitely readable and informative biographies, but they will not fly off your shelves even with pushing. Other books in the series include Sonia Sotomayor and Thurgood Marshall. Reviewer: Kristin Fletcher-Spear
