Meet the Author

George S. Morrison is professor of early childhood education at the University of North Texas where he teaches child development and early childhood classes to undergraduate and graduate students. He is an experienced teacher and was a principal in the public schools.

Professor Morrison's accomplishments include both a Distinguished Academic Service Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Outstanding Service and Teaching Awards from Florida International University. His books include Early Childhood Education Today, 11th Edition; Fundamentals of Early Childhood Education, 5th Edition; and Teaching in America , 5th Edition. Professor Morrison has also written books about the education and development of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers; child development; the contemporary curriculum; and parent/family/community involvement.

Dr. Morrison is a popular author, speaker, and presenter. He is senior contributing editor for the Public School Montessorian and also writes for a wide range of publications. His speaking engagements and presentations forcus on the future of early childhood education, the changing roles of early childhood teachers, the influence of contemporary educational reforms on early childhood education, and the application of best practices to faith-based programs.

Dr. Morrison is co-director of the Center for Success For Life Thailand (SFLT) at Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Tahiland. The center develops curricula and conducts teacher training designed to reform early childhood practices. He also lectures extensively on early childhood practices in Thailand, Taiwan, and China.

Preface

This is my eighth preface to Early Childhood Education Today. I've always tried to begin with words of encouragement and challenge, and this edition is no exception. This is an exciting time to be in the field of early childhood education. In fact, I can think of only one other time during my career when there was so much excitement and challenge: 1965, with the implementation of Head Start. The excitement and possibility in the air at that time was similar to that of today because of the current emphasis on brain and developmental research and a renewed interest in the importance of the early years.

Early childhood education is in the public spotlight. We are in the golden age of early childhood education for young children, parents, families, and professionals, and this age brings with it both possibilities and challenges. The possibilities are endless for you as an early childhood education professional, in what you can do for children and families and to change and remake the early childhood profession. An important question is, "What will you and others do with this `prime time' for early childhood education?"

I believe that how you and I respond to the opportunities we have in front of us will determine how long the current golden age of early childhood education lasts. You and other early childhood professionals must be creative in responding to the opportunities for helping young children, extending the interest in young children, and providing the support that they and their families need.

Goals of the Text

The primary goal of Early Childhood Education Today, Eighth Edition, isto help you meet the challenges of early childhood education and to help you be the best early childhood professional you can be. I believe this edition will give you the knowledge, skills, and insights necessary to confidently and appropriately assume your goal of being a leader in educating children, parents, and families.

I wrote Early Childhood Education Today to meet preservice teachers' desire for a learning text that is practical and based upon current ideas about what teaching young children is like today. Six main core themes are integrated throughout the text and provide a framework for reading and study. These themes are as follows:

  • Theory to Practice. This text will help you understand how theories of learning and educating young children are translated into practice by teachers and programs. The "Voice from the Field" and "Program in Action" sections provide real-life insights into how teachers in programs across the United States endeavor to apply early childhood theories to their everyday practices. In other words, you will read firsthand about professional colleagues who make theories come alive in concrete ways that truly help children succeed in school and life.


  • Diversity. The United States is a nation of diverse people, and this diversity is reflected in every early childhood classroom and program. You and your colleagues must have the knowledge and sensitivity to teach all students well, and you must understand how culture and language influence teaching and learning. In addition to two full chapters on diversity (chapter 14, "Multiculturalism: Education for Living in a Diverse Society," and chapter 15, "Children with Special Needs: Appropriate Education for All"), every other chapter of this edition emphasizes the theme of diversity through narrative examples and program descriptions.


  • Family-Centered, Community-Based Practice. To effectively meet children's needs, you and other early childhood professionals must collaborate with families and communities. Today, teaching is not an isolated endeavor in which one seeks to practice the craft of early childhood education in isolation from colleagues and others in the school and community. Successful partnerships at all levels are essential for effective teaching and learning. In addition to a chapter on this important topic (chapter 16, "Parent, Family, and Community Involvement: Cooperation and Collaboration"), every other chapter provides examples of successful partnerships and their influences on teaching and learning.

Organization and Coverage of the Text

Early Childhood Education Today, Eighth Edition, provides a thorough introduction to the field of early childhood education in a straightforward and engaging style. The book analyzes current issues and ideas and applies practical, developmentally appropriate strategies and models to the practice of early childhood education. This edition has been extensively revised to reflect the changes in society, research, and the practice of early childhood education. The text is comprehensive in its approach to the profession and is organized into five parts:

  • Part I, "Early Childhood Education and Professional Development," begins with a chapter on professional development. This chapter has been extensively revised and is designed to place professional practice at the heart of being a good teacher. Chapter 1 will help you engage in professional, ethical practice and sets the tone for what being an early childhood professional is all about. Chapter 2 provides you with an understanding of the current issues of early childhood education today and gives you insight into the research issues and political agendas shaping contemporary practice and programs.


  • Part II, "The Development of Early Childhood Programs," provides a historical overview of the field of early childhood education and descriptions of Montessori and Piagetian theories, ideas, and practices. These chapters also show how the past influences the present and how the two major theories of Montessori and Piaget influence programs for young children today. Chapter 6 is new to this edition and provides a comprehensive look at models of early childhood curricula and how they function.


  • Part III, "Developmentally Appropriate Programs and Practices," provides a comprehensive overview and discussion of children's development from infancy through the primary grades. In addition, these chapters provide guidelines for how to teach young children in developmentally appropriate ways and how to develop and implement programs that are developmentally appropriate.


  • Part IV, "Guiding and Assessing Young Children," provides practical guidelines for observing and authentically assessing young children, shows how to most effectively observe and assess, and explains how to apply the results of observation and assessment to your early childhood practice. How to guide children's behavior is also an important topic in early childhood education today. Chapter 12 suggests ideas for guiding children and helping them be responsible for their own behavior. These ideas will enable you to confidently manage classrooms and other early childhood settings.


  • Part V, "Meeting the Special Needs of Young Children," begins with a chapter on technology and young children. Technology is an important part of this information age, and it is imperative that young children learn to use it and that you and other teachers use it to support your teaching and children's learning. Chapters 14 and 15 address issues of multiculturalism, diversity, and children's special needs. These two chapters help you meet children's special needs in developmentally appropriate and authentic ways. Chapter 16 stresses the importance of cooperation and collaboration with family and community citizens. This chapter helps you learn how to develop partnerships and confidently interact with parents, families, and communities to provide the best education for all children.

Appendix A, "The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct," provides the basis for teaching in an ethical and professional manner, and Appendix B, "NAEYC Guidelines for Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs," helps assure that you teach and develop programs so that they meet the developmental and educational needs of children in ways that are appropriate to them as individuals.
