Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Leeber Cohen, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This book is largely based on an international symposium held in May 1992 on the Early Detection of Cancer of the Ovary With Transvaginal Sonography.
Purpose: The author wishes to demonstrate the extent of the clinical problem of ovarian cancer and that early detection of ovarian carcinoma is possible. Various early detection programs for ovarian cancer involving CA125, real-time ultrasound, and color flow Doppler are presented. The book meets these objectives and serves as a good summary of the proceedings of this symposium. However, the book does not extend sufficient coverage to the epidemiologic issues of mass screening and cost effectiveness.
Audience: The book is written for gynecologists, radiologists, and oncologists. The contributors are highly respected, well-recognized authorities in this field.
Features: The illustrations are numerous and well reproduced. The duplication of the color Doppler images on high quality paper is excellent. The references are thorough but are quickly being supplemented by new articles in the literature. The indexing is of average quality.
Assessment: This book would be useful to radiologists and gynecologists who are interested in an introduction to the subject of screening for ovarian cancer with color Doppler ultrasound. The illustrations and references are excellent. The book should but does not provide a chapter discussing the cost effectiveness of ovarian cancer screening. The contributors present a good deal of important information on the subject, but a final chapter summarizing and synthesizing the issues involved would have been helpful.

With the conviction that the early detection of ovarian cancer is the best way to reduce mortality from it, researchers and clinicians describe how to use sonography to detect lesions and tumors at their earliest stage, and to distinguish the benign from the malignant. Their 16 contributions, from a May 1992 symposium in Nashville, Tennessee, cover clinical aspects, methods for early detection, color doppler sonography, and early detection programs. Annotation c.
