Early Masters [Tradition]by Woody Guthrie
The 12 tracks on this mid-priced reissue were recorded by Moses Asch of Folkways Records in 1944, but issued several times by Stinson Records, notably on the album Woody Guthrie (SLP 44). Accompanied by Cisco Houston and Sonny Terry, Guthrie performs a series of traditional folk songs in his own adaptations, which went on to become folk and pop standards, including such songs as "Worried Man Blues," "Going Down the Road," and "Pretty Boy Floyd." Despite sonic cleansing, the recordings are sometimes of marginal sound quality, but the historic nature of the work overcomes such limitations. This is not as impressive a collection as some of the Smithsonian Folkways reissues of material from the same sessions, but it is also less expensive.
