Overview

The second edition of this bestselling narrative history has been revised and expanded to reflect recent scholarship. The book traces the transformation of England during the Tudor-Stuart period, from feudal European state to a constitutional monarchy and the wealthiest and most powerful nation on Earth.

  • Written by two leading scholars and experienced teachers of the subject, assuming no prior knowledge of British history
  • Provides student aids such as maps, illustrations, genealogies, and glossary
  • This edition reflects recent scholarship on Henry VIII and the Civil War
  • Extends coverage of the Reformations, the Rump and Barebone's Parliament, Cromwellian settlement of Ireland, and the European, Scottish, and Irish contexts of the Restoration and Revolution of 1688-9
  • Includes a new section on women’s roles and the historiography of women and gender
  • Accompanied by Sources and Debates in English History, 1485-1714

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“Scholars and students who want to begin to master earlymodern England need look no further. Bucholz and Key’s bookis the text to study and know. It is difficult to convey howuseful this text is—from its concise prose to its usefulcharts and graphs to its glossary and select bibliography, Bucholzand Key have done an admirable job.” (Scholars’ BookTalk, March 2009)

Praise for the first edition:

"This excellent book is consciously designed for students inNorth American universities who are studying this period for thefirst time, but its qualities are such that British students willfind it a remarkably effective and well-sustained synthesis. Thenarrative is readable, fluent and balanced ... Throughout, theauthors, both of whom are vastly experienced teachers as well asbeing active research scholars, have managed to delineate detaileffectively without obscuring the narrative flow ... It is, as theysay in their conclusion, 'a terrific story', and they have told itterrifically well." (History)

"Complementing its accessibility, Early Modern England iscomprehensive and true to recent scholarly conclusions. Bucholz andKey have produced a useful narrative for the present generation ofthose being introduced to English history in the period. It isengaging from first to last and merits close review by facultyacross the United States seeking a strong classroom text."(Albion)

"Robert Bucholz and Newton Key have written Early ModernEngland, 1485-1714: A Narrative History to fill the need for anauthoritative, one volume textbook covering the Tudor and Stuarteras that is written especially for an American audience. They havesucceeded in their goal." (H-Albion)

"Early Modern England is informative and a pleasure toread." (Sixteenth Century Journal)
