Early Years Live 1979-1983

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Ned Raggett
It's truth in advertising, because this well-worth-it collection, drawing on three club performances and a radio studio broadcast plus a one-off from another broadcast, delivers up 24 songs of Jeff Conolly and his merry men ranting, raving, and otherwise blasting their way through their own brand of garage/R&B-inspired madness. There's a good case for this being the ultimate Lyres album in ways -- Conolly clearly gets off on the live vibe, whipping his audiences into as much of a frenzy as possible and not expecting anyone to stay behind. Nearly everything is a cover of an earlier Conolly hero, from the Kinks to the Sonics to Otis Redding, but as Crypt boss Tim Warren ...

There's a good case for this being the ultimate Lyres album in ways -- Conolly clearly gets off on the live vibe, whipping his audiences into as much of a frenzy as possible and not expecting anyone to stay behind. Nearly everything is a cover of an earlier Conolly hero, from the Kinks to the Sonics to Otis Redding, but as Crypt boss Tim Warren puts it in his always entertaining style in the liner notes, "When nimrod 'alt' bands rake in the bucks covering sorry-assed 'classic' rock...hey, I'd gladly deal with the Lyres beltin' out NOTHING BUT COVERS." Admittedly, this makes Conolly's threat to do Led Zeppelin covers at one point all the more frightening. The radio broadcast tracks, taken from a 1983 date, have the clearest sound all around and show that era of the band, anchored by the mighty fine rhythm duo of Rick Corraccio and Paul Murphy, kicking up a storm. Highlights here include the revamps of "Gonna Find a New Love," "Busy Body," and "Nobody But Me," and a fine rip through the original "Buried Alive." The club show tapes are of slightly furrier fidelity, but no matter -- there's plenty of sass all around as the band makes its way through the likes of "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby" and "Love Man." Revivalism that transcends its roots to really let all the energy go -- couldn't ask for more from the Lyres, and they deliver in spades.
