Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This is part of the "Finding Out About Holidays" series and takes a look back at how the first Earth Day came about and what the aims were of those involved in the effort to set aside a special day to emphasis the cleaning up of the environment. The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 and Gaylord Nelson, the governor of Wisconsin at that time, was the guiding force behind the idea. In 1995, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work as the "Father of Earth Day." Earth Day, 1970 is considered to be the beginning of the environmental movement in America and since that day, the Environmental Protection Agency has been created and The Clean Air and Water Acts and the Endangered Species Act have been passed. Earth Day is not a national holiday and the next observance did not take place until 1990. Since then, it has been celebrated every year. There is a 1970s tone to the book, but the text is instructive and suggestions are offered encouraging kids to aid in a worthwhile cause. 2002, Enslow, $18.95. Ages 7 to 9. Reviewer: Carolyn Mott Ford
School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-A straightforward, somewhat didactic look at the history behind this red-letter day. The majority of the book focuses on how it was started, what was accomplished between the first celebration in 1970 and next in 1990, and how it became an annual, worldwide observance. Information on what students can do to promote and participate in Earth Day is given an entire chapter, as is advice on what readers can do to help clean up the environment. Sidebars at the beginning of each chapter offer slight additional information or statements, such as "Our planet is sick because we have not taken good care of it." Crisp, full-color photographs are sprinkled generously throughout the text. An Earth Day craft project is appended with the back matter. Overall, this title will be useful for students looking for basic information on this topic.-Lisa Gangemi Kropp, Middle Country Public Library, Centereach, NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
