School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-- Reading like a textbook, this title discusses the origins of Earth Day and describes how it is celebrated in schools and communities. While the focus is on pollution as the problem and on recycling and tree planting as courses of action, little mention is made of the broader concepts of conservation; preservation; and restoration of the land, air, and water; or of the development of a lifelong environmental ethic. Pioneer conservationists as such as Rachel Carson and John Muir are mentioned within a limited historical perspective. The Native American way of life is exemplified. Most of this simplistically presented information can be found in better form in current periodicals or even in encyclopedias. --Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, VA
