Overview

A passionate and lifelong defender of the environment, Vice President Al Gore describes in this classic best-selling book how human actions and decisions can endanger or safeguard the vulnerable ecosystem that sustains us all. The book's groundbreaking analysis helped place the environment on the national agenda, summoning politicians, the media, and the public to attention and action. The message remains just as urgent today as it did eight years ago: while much has been accomplished, we must meet a global environmental challenge that reaches into every aspect of our society.
In brave and unforgettable terms, Earth in the Balance probes the roots of the environmental crisis and offers a bold and forceful vision of a new, more sustainable path. Having provoked international discussion upon its original publication, it continues to confront us with profound challenges. Human civilization must change its course if we are to heal our ailing environment and preserve the earth's ecology for future generations.
Vice President Gore describes in a new foreword to this classic what we have achieved and what remains to be done, and issues a clarion call to begin the millennium with an "Environment Decade." It is time to reflect deeply on the fate of our planet and commit ourselves to its future.

    A reviewer

This is a wonderful book. It is a must-read for anyone concerned with our environment and the impact that we all have on the planet. Discussed within the book is everything from the effects of genetically modifying source of food (i.e. seeds/grain), how the use of antibiotics in animals/animal feed can affect humans, how we consume affects the turns the global climate takes, what can be done to stop Global Warming (and why so little has been done, by and large, so far), and much more. Again, an all-around fascinating book.

    The Truth...

Al Gore cares about the environment and uncovers the truths of global warming in this magnificent book. It is very well written and provides an extensive education of global climate and the terrible effects humans have on our planet. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Does anyone believe in science?

Suppose you went to the doctor, and he said that his medical education was based on the opinions of people he had talked to over the last 20 years. He then recommended radical surgery for you. He wouldn't actually do the surgery, but he would tell the surgeon what to do. What would you do? Vice president Gore has only one scientific reference in the back of his book. Everything else is opinions, and there are hundreds of them. Based on these opinions, he recommends radical changes. He would make the decisions that others carry out. I think there are problems, perhaps serious ones, with the environment. But do we base our decisions on gut feelings and emotions, or do we look to science. Science has given us space travel, computers , modern medicine, ... Over the years, opinions have given the best and the worst when put to use. I think it is sad that when you look at what the critics said about this book, for they did not notice the lack of science in this book. This lack doesn't mean the book is wrong, nor does it mean that it is right. It is probably both right and wrong. Opinions usually are. Good science is right. Unfortunately even science is corrupted today. Government grants and other grants are given based on how well the work supports a certain viewpoint rather than the quality of the scienctific investigation. President Clinton said he would base his decisions on science. As you may know, he and Al Gore often disagreed in private. I think they definitely disagreed on the role of science. This book and the opinions in it show no respect for science. What good is science if we only use it when it supports our opinion? What good are scientist if they become political and no longer speak the truth or bend the truth toward some goal? Does anyone believe in science?

A Thought Provoking Enviornmental Call To Arms

I was assigned this book for my Ecology class at the University of Georgia. I expected it to be boring and dull and hysterical- the sterotypical granola-eatin', tree-huggin' type of thing. To my surprise, Al Gore writes with intellect and passion about the environment. All of his arguments are backed up with solid facts and evidence, many of which I recognized from my Ecology classes. To think of the steps back the current administration has taken when Gore called for immediate political action over a decade ago makes me shudder. Clearly, our world is in the wrong hands. It is time Americans treat their habitat with the respect it deserves. Don't waste your time on petty partisan war books by Hannity, O'Riley, Coulter, or Moore; read a book that matters and focuses on answers rather than finger-pointing and name calling.

    Admirable!

Al Gore cares about the environment and the future of life on Earth. He writes compellingly and well. He is an unusual politician: honest and brave with a real desire to see realistic and noncontentious environmentalism policies be top priority on the government agenda.

Why should we believe a word he says?

He said, 'Ignorant Christians who are afraid to open their minds to teachings first offered outside their own system of belief by refusing to accept that the earth is our sacred mother, Christians have become a dangerous threat to the survival of humanity...blights on the environment.' He says, 'The last vestige of organized goddess worship was eliminated by Christianity,' and to him, 'It seems obvious that a better understanding of a religious heritage preceding our own by so many thousands of years could offer us new insights.' (pg. 261) Can you believe this? Need he really say more? This man goes to church, claims to be part of the Baptist religion- and he made this statement in his book! I personally find it very disturbing.

A Book of Pure Brilliance and Immense Importance.

Understanding the currect effects of our actions on the envirionment is of such extreme importance these days and for that reason alone this book should be required reading in our schools. However, Mr. Gore goes far beyond this to properly include environmental factors in history, in the economy, in religion, and in our future. Very well written and very well researched, this could be one of the most important books you've ever read. I know that it has been for me.
