Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit

( 6 )

Overview

In this provocative work, Vice President Gore argues that the engines of human civilization have brought on imminent catastrophe, and that only a worldwide mobilization can save the earth for future generations. His analysis of environmental crises along political, scientific, and economic lines leads to a plan for action.

Why should we believe a word he says?

He said, 'Ignorant Christians who are afraid to open their minds to teachings first offered outside their own system of belief by refusing to accept that the earth is our sacred mother, Christians have become a dangerous threat to the survival of humanity...blights on the environment.' He says, 'The last vestige of organized goddess worship was eliminated by Christianity,' and to him, 'It seems obvious that a better understanding of a religious heritage preceding our own by so many thousands of years could offer us new insights.' (pg. 261) Can you believe this? Need he really say more? This man goes to church, claims to be part of the Baptist religion- and he made this statement in his book! I personally find it very disturbing.

A Book of Pure Brilliance and Immense Importance.

Understanding the currect effects of our actions on the envirionment is of such extreme importance these days and for that reason alone this book should be required reading in our schools. However, Mr. Gore goes far beyond this to properly include environmental factors in history, in the economy, in religion, and in our future. Very well written and very well researched, this could be one of the most important books you've ever read. I know that it has been for me.

A Thought Provoking Enviornmental Call To Arms

I was assigned this book for my Ecology class at the University of Georgia. I expected it to be boring and dull and hysterical- the sterotypical granola-eatin', tree-huggin' type of thing. To my surprise, Al Gore writes with intellect and passion about the environment. All of his arguments are backed up with solid facts and evidence, many of which I recognized from my Ecology classes. To think of the steps back the current administration has taken when Gore called for immediate political action over a decade ago makes me shudder. Clearly, our world is in the wrong hands. It is time Americans treat their habitat with the respect it deserves. Don't waste your time on petty partisan war books by Hannity, O'Riley, Coulter, or Moore; read a book that matters and focuses on answers rather than finger-pointing and name calling.

    Admirable!

Al Gore cares about the environment and the future of life on Earth. He writes compellingly and well. He is an unusual politician: honest and brave with a real desire to see realistic and noncontentious environmentalism policies be top priority on the government agenda.

    A Political and Social Masterpiece

Its time to understand the environment, and the dynamic we play in it... Time to throw off our petty political ties, and join in the protection of something that should outlive us, and not the other way aro

An essential book for anyone concerned about our future.

This book takes an extremely thorough and well-reasoned look at the impact that human beings have on their habitat. Beyond listing current and potential ecological problems, Gore considers the options for dealing with each crisis. Most importantly, he formulates a comprehensive plan to deal with these problems and overcome the momentum of degradation that human beings have created. From both a scientific and policy perspective, this book is a great success.
