Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
In this appealing "Energy in Action" series, tweens and even teens learn how energy works in many different spheres. Each book includes big double-page spreads that define energy, matter, forces, and their interactions, using examples highlighting the book's topic. In this volume, the authors introduce types of energy that shape Earth and its universe, explaining also the forces of gravity, magnetism, friction, and air resistance. A thunderstorm on Earth produces electrical energy, light energy as lightning, and sound energy as thunder. Earth's core contains a tremendous amount of stored (or potential) heat energy, making tectonic plates move, as during earthquakes; volcanic eruptions take place when friction causes heat energy to melt rock, blasted from Earth by potential and kinetic energy (well illustrated in color diagrams). Nuclear reactions from our powerful Sun provide us with light and heat energy, while the Sun's electromagnetic radiation includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and visible light. Especially interesting are diagrams showing solar winds and auroras, which some students may have seen as Northern Lights. Hurricanes and tsunamis are caused by the kinetic energy of wind—a color photo shows the tremendous force of the 2011 tsunami in Japan. Each book is sprinkled with "It's a Fact" sidebars conveying basic information and "Snapshots" about scientists like Nicolaus Copernicus, who first realized that Earth and planets orbit the Sun. A "Future Flash" page illustrates how sustainable geothermal electricity is produced from heat energy. The books have an energy of their own with backgrounds of lively greens, blues, lavenders, and golds; photos and diagrams are placed just where they're needed, well-selected and clearly reproduced. An excellent value for the modest price! Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
