Though billed as a series start, this hefty, rambling tome picks up directly where the Dark Heavens trilogy left off, with little time spent on bringing new readers up to speed. Australian Emma Donahoe's adventures among Chinese gods and demons have led her to Hong Kong, where she serves as guardian to Simone, the daughter of weakened Dark Lord Xuan Wu, and manages the Dark Lord's multi-million dollar business. She's also the Regent of the Northern Heavens, tasked with regularly slapping down misbehaving demons of all shapes and sizes. Emma is overwhelmed by her responsibilities, and as Simone comes into her powers and requires training that her father is unable to provide, the two must look to unexpected quarters for help. Chan valiantly tries to combine Chinese legend with the thrill of a fast-paced martial-arts movie, but too many names and not enough context produce a plodding jumble with a lengthy cast of indifferent characters. Meet the Author

Twenty years ago Kylie Chan married a Hong Kong national in a traditional Chinese wedding ceremony in Eastern China. She and her husband lived in Australia for eight years, then in Hong Kong for ten years.

She has seen a great deal of Chinese culture and has come to appreciate the customs and way of life.

Two years ago she closed down her successful IT consultancy company in Hong Kong and moved back to Australia. She decided to use her knowledge of Chinese mythology, culture, and martial arts to weave a story that would appeal to a wide audience.

Since returning to Australia, Kylie has studied kung fu (Wing Chun and Southern Chow Clan styles) as well as tai chi, and is now a senior belt in both forms. She has also made an intensive study of Buddhist and Taoist philosophy and has brought all of these together into her storytelling.

Kylie is a mother of two and lives in Brisbane.

    Love Kylie Chan

    This book isn't as brilliant as the previous books in this world, it's just almost as brilliant, which is saying something. Kylie Chan is my new favorite author. Emma is trying to hold it all together now that John's gone, but it's hard. The demons are breaking in where they shouldn't be able to, the rocks are going missing, Simone's been kicked out of school for ditching to kill demons too often, Leo's missing from his condo in hell, and Emma's still having trouble not turning into a snake mother when she's ticked off. Whew. Who wouldn't be overwhelmed? Love the mythology, the characterization, and I'm almost as eager for John to come home as Emma and Simone are. But, can't worry about that too much when the demons are overrunning the worlds. You absolutely won't be disappointed with any of the books in this world. Can't wait for the next one.

    Slow start to this series.  The Dark Heavens series kept you rea

    Slow start to this series.  The Dark Heavens series kept you reading and wanting more.  This one I keep dragging myself back too.  It's still good, but not nearly as good as the first three.  Plus she starts right out with new characters with no explanation of who they are, you're just supposed to follow along I guess.  I bought all 6 of the books, so I sincerely hope the next one is better!
