Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
When Dad reminds Stella that it is bedtime, she steps into her space suit pajamas and blasts off on an imaginary trip to the moon. After some joyful bouncing around, she heads deep into the solar system. She discovers some new stars and watches a comet zoom by. She lands on a strange planet and admires some tiny blue bugs before she heads home. Throughout all of her adventures she communicates with earth (her dad). He sends messages about keeping the noise down, not jumping on the bed, and getting tucked in tight. Then Stella sends some messages but does not receive answers. She gets concerned and returns home where she finds Dad dozing in the chair. Familiar items shown in Stella's room appear throughout her travels, including a toy chicken that has imaginatively become the spaceship. Brightly colored illustrations fill the pages with action and adventure. A good read aloud choice for young children.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Stella loves everything about space, and her imagination takes her out into the solar system at bedtime. She lands on a planet and meets tingly blue space bugs, but she stays safely grounded to Earth through on-and-off conversations with Dad. "EARTH TO STELLA: DON'T FORGET TO SCRUB BEHIND THOSE EARS!" "`CHECK,' said Stella," just before she dons her helmet, boards her chicken-shaped rocket ship, and starts the countdown to blastoff. "EARTH TO STELLA: COULD YOU KEEP THE NOISE DOWN, PLEASE?" What makes this story extra special is the poignant bedtime routine between father and daughter. Their bond is verbal and visibly loving, yet always filled with a sense of fun and a shared love of space. Children get a glimpse of the sun, stars, and a shooting comet. Everything will draw them in: the protagonist's vivid imagination; the pages bursting with color; the innovative illustrations in pastels, crayon, and paint; and the dialogue boxes that resemble radio transmissions. A stellar choice for independent readers and groups alike.-Wanda Meyers-Hines, Ridgecrest Elementary School, Huntsville, AL Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A budding astronaut's bedtime routine involves side trips to the Moon and beyond in this good-humored tribute to the power of imagination. When her dad announces that it's time for bed, Stella leaves her desk, which is cluttered with scientific equipment, to wash up, climb into her spacesuit-er, pajamas-and soar off into space. Hopman illustrates the voyage with softly colored cartoon views of the helmeted young pilot, in a space ship that closely resembles the plush hen on her sun-patterned bedspread, zooming past stars and planets as a parental voice (see title) calls reminders from behind. Ultimately, Stella "returns" to Earth, and wakes up her dozing father to announce that she's found a new life form. Off they blast bedroom-ward together-happy landing. (Picture book. 5-8)
