Disappointing End to the (Presumed) Trilogy

The first book of the series, "Marsbound", was excellent...but it should have been left alone. The second and third felt like movie sequels - needed to continue the story for popularity/profit reasons, but the author really didn't have much left to say, or much interest in saying it. The second, "Starbound", was okay, but felt like a transitional story. The third, this one, was very disappointing. After going on in an uninspired "Post-Apocalypse" form, it just....stops. One gets the distinct impression that the author was just sick of it all, wanted to get on with other things, and just created a Deus Ex Machina of the worst sort just to have some sort of quickie resolution. I suppose he could claim that was the point of the arc of the story, facing the caprious and godlike "Others", and that it was intended to more a character study and evocative of life, which often is capricious and just ends....but if that were the case, the character development is just to shallow to qualify. If it's to be "space opera," then do that justice!

The author is here unfair to to his readers, as we invest time and commitment (not to mention, money) in the main characters, only to have them cursorily tossed aside. Perhaps there will be fourth to have a better resolution - and frankly, to make it up to his readers - but I'll be very leery of it, and his other works, after this...which is a shame, because when he's really engaged, as in "Marsbound" and "The Forever War", he's a master.

    INFO/RULES ABOUT EARTHBOUND RP

Ok. So since the RP theme has so many possibilities and godmod-worthy stuff, here are some rules:

1: Don't godmod. Duh. (Though stuff like PK starstorm and rockin are allowed. Just don't abuse it!)

2: You need to be aware that PSI is limited so that you don't blow up the world 2 seconds into the RP.

3: No invincible enemies. But of course who would want to be a living statue?

4: Anybody who wants to be their own character not from the series, or a monster, post their bio on result 2. At least with official characters, you can look up online. And enemies need personality.

5: Don't be boring! Nobody likes a boring RP.

    And that's it! Have fun!

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

This is the third (and so far last) book of the Marsbound trilog

This is the third (and so far last) book of the Marsbound trilogy. It is quite different from the previous novels. The first takes place mostly on Mars, the second mostly in deep space, and the last mostly on a future Earth. Much of this book has a post-apocalyptic feel. This is always a fascinating topic for me; however, here it is only part of a much larger story. I could so this story easily being continued in many additional volumes, but the plot seems to be wrapped up (a bit suddenly) at the end. I enjoyed this trilogy and its exploration of a lot of complex ideas, but many questions were left unanswered. I like the way Mr. Haldeman writes.
Michael Travis Jasper, Author of the Novel “To Be Chosen”
