'Earthly Powers' is a sprawling satire covering about seventy years. It tells the story of an earthy priest who would become pope. It is narrated by his brother's wife's brother, an aged homosexual novelist who rejected Catholicism in his youth. Don Carlo the priest is obviously a stand-in for Pope John XXIII. Many important historical and literary figures turn up throughout the book. Thematically, it riffs on the anbiguity of moral freedom and human goodness. The book is thoughtful, surprising, and very funny. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
