To me, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake was just that. A major, terrible earthquake...until I read this book.
The details of the aftermath drew me into this book. All of the corruption and power were exposed. The unauthorized Marshall Law was amazing.
Yes, I'm tough when it comes to giving review, but this is one book I highly recommend.

Thomas makes the San Francisco quake of 1906 so real and immediate it is as though it just happened yesterday. As the horrible, inevitable conclusion and its aftermath get closer with each turn of the page, the stories that unfold along the way are a trenchant exploration of human foibles, courage, and strange willingness to ignore that potential for violent death right underneath their feet. Was this review helpful?
