Overview

This proceedings, Earthquake Induced Movements and Seismic Remediation of Existing Foundations and Abutments, contains papers presented at the ASCE Annual Convention and Exposition held in San Diego, California, October 23-27, 1995. With the increased use of displacement-based analysis and design, the evaluation of seismically-induced foundation and abutment movement has become a topic of great interest. Empirical, experimental, and analytical approaches to the prediction of seismically-induced foundation and abutment displacement have been researched. In addition, remediation of existing foundations for mitigation of seismic hazards has also become a topic of considerable professional interest. This proceedings provides the civil engineer with a much needed collection of research results and case histories on these two important seismic engineering topics. The evaluation of seismically-induced foundation and abutment movement has become a topic of great interest as geotechnical earthquake engineering moves from force-based to displacement-based analysis and design. In this volume, contributors provide research results and case histories of seismically-induced movements of foundations and abutments, as well as research and practice on foundation remediation for mitigation of seismic hazards. Papers examine dynamic soil-pile interaction behavior in submerged sands; examine diverse bridge foundation remediation considerations; model passive earth pressure for bridge abutments; and highlight a longterm test of compaction grouting for liquefaction mitigation.
