Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Although the earth is constantly in motion, a sudden and sometimes abrupt movement of its plates occurs. The event is an earthquake. For background information, the text briefly covers the layers of the earth and then describes the nature of the movements—the slips, bumps, and slides. Included in the text is how people explained the seismic movement. Back in history, people created stories to rationalize how an earthquake occurred. While scientists now can describe what happens during an earthquake, there is still more to understand about this seismic activity. Color illustrations are on every page, along with very simple diagrams. In the back of the book are some earthquake facts and information about what to do when there is an earthquake. This book provides opportunities for children to read nonfiction; however, readers may need adult guidance to understand the content vocabulary on the topic and the concepts. Those readers wishing to learn more details about earthquakes will need to seek out other resources for further information. This book is part of the "Ready-To-Read" series featuring "Natural Disasters." Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung

John Wallace’s formal training was not in illustration, but rather theology, which he received at Cambridge University. However, he always loved drawing, and one of his early jobs was as a newspaper cartoonist. In his children’s books illustrations, John is particularly inspired by what he calls “the gooniness” of young school children. John and his family divide their time between Brighton, England, and Long Island, New York.
