Gr 4-6-On a family camping trip to a deserted island, Jonathan's mother is injured. The 12-year-old volunteers to stay alone with his 6-year-old physically disabled sister so their parents can get to the hospital as quickly as possible. What should have been only an afternoon's inconvenience turns into a deadly situation when an earthquake strikes, destroying the camping area and threatening to flood the entire island. With no food, supplies, or means of contacting help, Jonathan must find a way to save Abby and himself. The tautly written story sustains the suspense without ever becoming melodramatic. Jonathan is a sympathetic and realistic character. His sensitive response to Abby's fears is mature but never unbelievable. This exciting tale is a fine choice for most collections.-Elaine E. Fans of adventure stories are going to love this book. Jonathan's family decided to go on a vacation in Northern California. They decided to camp on an island. Unfortunately, Jonathan's mother breaks her ankle and if that isn't bad enough there is an earthquake which felled two large trees prevented Jonathan from getting back after he went for help. Their trailer is smashed, the food supple is gone, so Jonathan decides to go for help. He took his dog and placed his sister Abby under the redwood for shelter. Food supplies are gone, the water was rising quickly and eventually the island sunk. This is a great adventure story and both boys and girls. There is also good information about earthquakes with is very interesting. Family unity is certainly focused on and how everyone needs to work together. This particular copy has three CD's and the narrator does a great job. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs

Meet the Author

Peg Kehret was born in Wisconsin, grew up in Minnesota, spent fourteen years in California, and now lives with her husband in Washington State. They have two grown children, four grandchildren, one dog, and one cat.

Peg's novels for children are regularly recommended by the American Library Association, the International Reading Association, and the Children's Book Council. She has won many state "young reader" or "children's choice" awards. Peg's characters are ordinary kids who find themselves in exciting situations and who use their wits to solve their problems. There is usually humor as well as suspense in her books. A long-time volunteer at The Humane Society, she often uses animals in her stories.

Before she began writing books for children, Peg published plays, short stories, articles, and two books for adults. She is a frequent speaker at conferences for librarians and teachers.

At the age of twelve, Peg had polio and was paralyzed from the neck down. Because she can remember that experience and her year of recovery so vividly, she finds it easy to write in the viewpoint of a twelve or thirteen year old. Most of her main characters are that age. Her autobiography, Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio, won the Golden Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators, and the PEN Center USA West Award for Children's Literature.

When she is not writing, Peg likes to watch baseball, bake cookies, and pump her old player piano.

It was a Tuesday and they did not have school so they and their parents decided to go campingon an island in Northern California. there is no electricity in the campground. there wasnt people because it was duing the week. Next, Jonathan was your average boy. He liked baseball. He was a little bit mad, cause he wanted to be home watching th world Seres. His favorite team was in it. he did not have a tv or phone there to find out the score. he couldnt pick it up on the radio. Second, They went for a hike. whet they were hiking a earthquake happened. before that the mom fell and broke her ankle. So they left Jonathan And Abby to get back for themselves. on they were slow because she is on a walker. the a d a hard time but when they got back Jonathans Momand dad came back and told him his team won it made him feel better an then they went home. he was very excited.

I thought this would be a good book by the title and the cover illustration, but when I read it I wasn't that impressed. This book is about two kids and there family on a camping trip at Magpie Campground, in Northern California. Jonathon 'the main character' and his sister, Abby, decide to go for a hike by themselves without any supervision and soon an earthquake hits. The main plot of the story is just trying to find there family. I didn't like this book because the author didn't describe the characters very well and later in the story it actually gets more complicated than more clear to what was happening. I wouldn't recommend this book to people who like to get into detail.

This was a very fantastic book about a boy and a girl left alone on an island, when a terrible earthquke hits! They have to figure out how to get off the flooding island. There's only 1 problem. The girl, Abby, has a problem with her legs, and can't walk, or swim. This book is my favorite book, and I don't mind reading it for a second....or third.....or 1 millionth time!

Earthquake Terror is an action-packed,fun-loving book that will make you feel like you're part of the plot! This book will stay in your mind until a week after you finished it. It has a bunch of exciting turns every flip of the page. In one chapter it's scary, and the next it's full of excitement. Even though Jonathan is in a terrible earthquake, he doesn't even hesitate for one minute to rescue his only sister who is paralyzed. He also tries to rescue his dog. This beloved book by Peg Kehret will keep you asking for more!
