Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
A fabulous photo of white water rushing over moss covered rocks graces the cover of this book. The easy-to-read opening paragraph states that "We swim in it. We bathe in it. Our landscape is carved and changed by it," and that "Without it, plants, animals, and people could not survive!" This is an incredible opening that will stir students to think about the precious resource of water. Plenty of photos add to the ease of comprehension of text in the four chapters entitled "The Blue Planet," "Water, Water Everywhere," "Water in Action," and "Saving Water." Some of the interesting information listed in the book includes the facts that the earth is covered by 70% water, blood is 83% water, a watermelon is more than 95% water, and Earth's largest ocean, the Pacific, covers 60,060,894 square miles. Various states of water are discussed so students can understand the material. Short sentences keep the text readable while offering a plethora of facts. The material is backed by a science consultant and includes experiments for readers to try. They consist of a few easy to follow steps and have photos that add to the ease of completing the experiments. The final chapter stresses how students can save water for our Earth. A glossary and index follow the text in this book, which is worth adding to the science curriculum in middle grade classrooms. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
