Editorial Reviews

Pirates abound in this OEL (original English language) manga, set in a futuristic landscape in which New Jersey has become a home for criminals and New York City lies underwater. A young boy named Archer has been saved by a group of pirates, brought aboard their ship, La Revancha (The Revenge), and taken in as their new cabin boy. He had possessed a valuable treasure map that was taken by a rival pirate gang. Now Archer must rescue his map and become acclimated to life aboard La Revancha and his new mates. A truly masterful and spectacular work, this should resonate deeply with its target audience. Cloonan's themes, setting and characters are exciting and well developed, and her art, with its distinctive bold, heavy lines, is the perfect complement. Her young pirate characters' style should appeal to teen readers?—?many are dreadlocked, pierced, and tattooed?—?and resemble and echo trends in popular youth culture. An action-packed thrill ride full of swashbuckling pirates, sea monsters and humor, this first volume in a projected trilogy should hold great teen appeal and will especially please fans of pirate stories. KLIATT Codes: JS*—Exceptional book, recommended for junior and senior high school students. 2006, Tokyopop, 192p. illus., Ages 12 to 18.
