All Music Guide
The second Butterfield album had an even greater effect on music history, paving the way for experimentation that is still being explored today. This came in the form of an extended blues-rock solo some 13 minutes -- a real fusion of jazz and blues inspired by the Indian raga. This groundbreaking instrumental was the first of its kind and marks the root from which the acid rock tradition emerged. ~ Jeff Tamarkin & Michael Erlewine

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

Paul Butterfield with both Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop on Guitar.

The whole album is wonderful but the most important cut is certainly East-West.

    Seminal Work

The first 7:05 of the title track are simply the finest improvisation on guitars that I've ever heard; after that, it gets even better. From 7:05 to the end, it's absolutely trancendental.
