Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Baumann
Petey and Old Jack, two farm dogs, are worried there will be no Easter for their girl, Belle, and all the other children. The Easter Bunny has come down with the flu and also has the blues. After talking to Mrs. Bunny, the two friends decide to take over for the Easter Bunny by enlisting the help of the farm and forest animals. The ducks and chickens are invited to donate eggs, the squirrels are recruited to decorate eggs with their tails, the birds will mix up paint using berries and fruits, and the dogs and deer will deliver baskets. Mrs. Bunny provides the baskets and the animals get to work. Luckily the Easter Bunny pulls through just in time. He uses his super powers to provide Easter surprises for the baskets and treats for all the animals that helped get the baskets ready to deliver. Attractive watercolor and ink illustrations complement the springtime story and do not interfere with the text. This book will be popular with beginning chapter book readers, who will be looking for more adventures of Petey and Old Jack. Reviewer: Nancy Baumann

K-Gr 2

The Easter Bunny is ill and blue, much to the consternation of the local poultry. Two dogs, concerned about children's happiness, organize the animals to collect eggs, paint them, and distribute Easter baskets. In the nick of time, the Easter Bunny, imbued with his annual super powers, appears to finish the job. Most readers of this early chapter book will probably not know what it means to have the blues, but they will understand being too sick to do something, even something to which they look forward. The willingness of the animals to work together is well depicted. The language is appropriate for a level two beginning reader and includes growth words like "scurried," "flicked," and "commotion." The entertaining illustrations, which depict ducks carrying eggs in their bills and deer toting baskets on their antlers, gleefully support the text.-Linda M. Kirkus Reviews
A pallid Easter tale posits a Bunny whose flu-triggered blues have got him so down he can't perform, so the local animals, led by Petey the pup, pitch in to help. Four short chapters tell the story, with Old Jack providing the necessary exposition to both Petey and readers: Just a "plain old rabbit most of the year...[r]ight before Easter he gets his superpowers and creates spring magic." Because Petey's beloved Belle and "[a]lmost all children love the Easter Bunny" (stated with a bland assumption of cultural hegemony), the critters decide to come to the rescue. To say this tale has loose threads is a wild understatement. What is the magic that gives the Easter Bunny his "superpowers" every spring? And why can't those superpowers overcome the flu? Isn't it perilous to rest the whole holiday on the shoulders of one evidently frail rabbit? The goodwill manifest by the helping animals banishes the Bunny's blues, thank goodness, so Easter will happen after all. What a surprise. Buy an extra copy of The Bunny Who Found Easter instead.
