Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Christine Cassello
This book is part of a "Tales from the Back Pew" series, and written to present the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ; but I think it goes too far in mixing the secular with it in order to entertain children. It is written and illustrated as a cartoon with dialogue in balloons and begins with children in Sunday school coloring Easter eggs. One boy makes his a monster and the teacher says it is not the spirit of Easter and tells them the story of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection; but along with this are questions of how the Easter egg and Easter Bunny became part of the celebration to which the teacher gives no explanation except to say people added it. There are also pages of egg riddles, before the teacher presents the story and bunny jokes after, along with a silly page of "Where Not to Hide an Easter Egg." Those detract from the message the author wants to convey because that is what the children will be most interested in and remember the best. I would not recommend this book for any church group.
