His company, Lifelines Research (est. 1990) allows him to undertake freelance research into whole family histories for clients, as well as acting as a record agent for researchers who were unable to access the major London record offices. From 1998 to 2011 he worked at the Family Records Centre at The National Archives and when he left he had been Principal Family History Specialist for two years. He now runs his Lifelines Research full time.

David has written several books: The Family Records Centre Guide to Family History: The Basics and Beyond (2003) which was reissued in 2004 as the official research guide to the first series of BBC's Who Do You Think You Are? He wrote the second editions to three Public Records Office books: Getting Started in Family History, Using Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates and Using Census Returns (all 2000); Census: The Expert Guide with Peter Christian (2008).
