Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Macunovich, a Michigan landscape designer, addresses this book to the beginning landscape professional and to home gardeners with ``a year or more of dirt on their knees,'' who recognize the value of investing time and energy in planning their gardens. Her 12-step approach emphasizes the preliminary work of assessing the purpose of the garden, the site, and the financial and physical resources of the person who will maintain the planting. Only then does she introduce the complexities of plant selection, color theory, focal points and frames, and other design elements, illustrated with sample checklists, sketches, and plans. She also explains how to interpret sun/shade designations on nursery pot tags and to analyze entries in plant encyclopedias for characteristics that contribute to the design. She concludes with a very up-to-date bibliography. Highly recommended for public libraries.-- Beth Clewis, Prince William P.L., Va.
