Meet the Author

TED VILLAIRE has hiked, paddled, camped, and bicycled extensively within the Western Great Lakes region. As a Chicago resident, he loves discovering scenic hiking destinations close to home. In addition to writing 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Chicago, he is the author of the forthcoming books: Camping Illinois, Rail Trails Illinois, Road Biking Illinois, and Best Bike Rides Near Chicago.

Villaire is a regular contributor to the Backpacker magazine website and has written freelance articles for a variety of magazines and newspapers. He served as the editor of a weekly Chicago neighborhood newspaper and worked for a number of years as a publications editor for a large, Chicago-based nonprofit.

Villaire received a bachelor’s degree from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a master’s degree from DePaul University in Chicago. Recently, he served as a hiking coach for the Illinois chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
