Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara Wheatley
The classic art of origami is introduced to readers in this first book in the "Origami" series. Children and adults alike will have hours of fun learning and mastering this ancient Japanese craft. Meinking begins with a short history of origami and a description of materials that can be used for the projects in the book. Detailed photographs illustrate the basic folds needed, diagrams show the folding symbols, and instructions for making the necessary square piece of paper are included. The easy and fun paper cup project introduces readers to origami, but aptly warns: "But drink fast. This paper cup won't last long!" The projects that follow increase in difficulty, but allow readers to practice the basic folds while making fun creations and models. Projects include childhood standbys such as the banger and fortune-teller, but also introduce new models such as the samurai helmet, pyramid, and heart. The spaceship, spinning top, and butterfly provide the reader with active projects that not only stimulate their creativity, but also provide amusement. Fun facts about origami, a table of contents, a glossary, an index, and a list of resources including Internet sites and books add to the value of this book. Reviewer: Barbara Wheatley
