Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Origami is a simple art form that requires only a small piece of paper. This collection of toys is a twist on the traditional Asian practice. Much origami is created just to be admired but these seven toys are intended for play. The first few pages provide basic instructions, i.e. what tools and materials will be needed and any specifics about how the directions are to be interpreted. Origami is all about folding paper in a precise sequence. Having clear instructions is very important and essential to success. These directions are easy to follow with lots of lines and arrows to indicate how the paper is to be manipulated. The first toy is a basketball hoop that stands on its own. A crow hops along the tabletop with some assistance. Other toys included are a crown, an air shark, a mini piano and a sumo wrestler. These are clever designs that are rather simple so children can make them with little assistance. Additional resources include a list of origami books and a web site. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
School Library Journal
Gr 1–3—Following the standard introduction of required materials (origami paper, pencil, ruler, scissors, etc.), these books all cover the same basic folding techniques. Harbo suggests either practicing the folds before starting or turning back to these pages for a refresher when stuck. After that, there is one project per brightly colored spread, with the boxed pictures of the steps large enough to see the folding process. All of the projects include an extra tip for adding animal characteristics, altering the scale, or decorating or reinforcing the paper. Further appeal comes from the fact that many of the origami figures do not have to remain stationary. Some can be manipulated and played with after completion: the boats in Ocean can float, for example, since the closing tip involves making them waterproof by coloring the bottom edges with crayon; and the crown described in Toys can be worn. There may only be seven projects in each book, but they are more than enough to hold the interest of young ones smitten by the idea of folding paper into shapes.
