Colorful computer generated illustrations and minimal text combine to make an appealing introduction to the protein, grains, fruits, vegetables and dairy groups of foods followed by an explanation of the USDA MyPlate concept which has replaced the food pyramid of the past. MyPlate emphasizes a balance of the five food groups as well as portion control. Boxed information throughout provides tidbits on vitamins and minerals and encourages eating whole foods rather than processed ones. Remaining text discourages too much sugar and encourages a variety of color in the choice of foods. A simple recipe for fruit smoothies is included.
