Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Leis-Newman
While the design and format may make this book appear to be geared toward a younger audience, there is a refreshing amount of updated information, with minimal padding. The introduction starts with an anecdote about a girl who is making herself vomit, and then moves onto chapters covering basic facts about eating disorders, the connection between mental illness and genetics with eating disorders, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorders, other eating disorders, learning to love your body, seeking help, and other resources. One of the most helpful sections is “hot topics Q&A” with situations such as, “My friend is getting so skinny. But I’m not sure she has an eating disorder.” While there are brief statements from parents or people with eating disorders, the text is careful not to glamorize the illness. Additionally, unlike older non-fiction books on the topic, this one only spends a page on media influences and significantly more time on the mental illness aspect, as well as genetic predisposition. It is also helpful to have up-to-date information about “binge eating disorder” and “Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.” Other features include sidebars, a glossary, and an index. With a relatively low price point, this is a worthy addition to a library. It is part of the “Straight Talk” series from Crabtree Publishing. Reviewer: Elizabeth Leis-Newman; Ages 12 up.
