Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Swinney's book is about to join the ranks of Arlene Eisenberg and others' What To Eat When You're Expecting ( LJ 11/15/86), Mary Anne Hess and Anne Hunt's Eating for Two ( LJ 1/29), and Louise Lambert-Lagare's Feeding Your Baby from Conception to Two Years ( LJ 9/1/91) as an inexpensively priced guide to fetal/maternal nutrition. Swinney, a registered dietician and mother, has had extensive experience in counseling pregnant women. She thoroughly addresses such topics as preconception nutrition, dietary needs during each trimester, vegetarianism, food additives, nutritional supplements, weight-gain, energy needs, high-risk pregnancies, breastfeeding, and fitness. Swinney also includes over 150 menus and 85 recipes complete with nutrient analysis. She even devotes a chapter to fast food ``junkies,'' featuring charts that detail which fast foods are the healthiest. Her illustrations, charts, liberal use of bullets, and a warm colloquial style of writing make this guide very easy to use. For everyday food questions and current practical information, Swinney's book is a recommended purchase, especially if a library doesn't have the other aforementioned titles.-- Angela Washington-Blair, Brookhaven Coll. Great pregnancy nutrition advice!

I loved this book. Swinney gives advice on everything from satisfying cravings to what to eat when you don't feel like eating to what nutrients you and your baby need in what quantities. I found this book to be much better than 'What To Eat When You're Expecting' because it is more realistic. Although I tried to eat healthfully and I didn't eat everything in sight during my pregnancy, I certainly ate things (like french fries and ice cream) that weren't the best nutritional bets. Swinney acknowledges that it's next to impossible to eat a 'perfect' diet, especially when you're pregnant. She admits that the occasional 'cheat' won't do any harm to your or your baby.
