Overview

Ten years ago, Carol Alt was feeling bad. Really bad. She had chronic headaches, sinusitis, and stomach ailments; she was tired and listless. And then Carol started eating raw—and changed her life. Eating in the Raw begins with her story and then presents practical, how-to information on everything you need to know about the exciting movement that’s been embraced by Demi Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Sting, Edward Norton, and legions of other health-minded people. You’ll learn:

•What exactly raw food is—and isn’t—and how to integrate it into your diet
•How to avoid the all-or-nothing pitfall: you can eat some cooked foods, you can eat some foods partially cooked, and you don’t have to deprive yourself
•Why raw food is not just for vegetarians or vegans—Carol eats meat, and so can you
•The differences between cooked and raw vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, and what they mean for you
•An ease-in approach to eating raw, and how to eat raw in restaurants

In addition, Carol answers frequently asked questions and offers forty simple recipes for every meal, from light dishes such as Gazpacho and Lentil Salad to entrees including Tuna Tartare and Spaghetti al Pesto and even desserts like Pumpkin Pie and Apple Tart with Crème Anglaise—rounding out a thorough, accessible, and eminently compelling case why in the raw is the best way to eat.

    A reviewer

Ms. Alt is dead wrong about how healthy raw foods are. 'Raw' does not mean safe or bacteria-free. Ask the mothers whose babies died after they ate soft cheeses made with unpasteurized milk. They had spontaneous abortions when they contracted Listeria monocytogenes. Ask the fathers of toddlers whose children died or went into kidney failure after they ate raw or undercooked ground meat contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Ask the families of diabetics who ate raw oysters and died from a Vibrio vulnificus infection. Ask the families of senior citizens who drank high protein shakes made from raw eggs and nearly died from Salmonella enteriditis. People have cooked food for thousands of years not because it tastes better, but because raw animal foods are often not safe to eat raw. The heat of cooking or pasteurization kills dangerous bacteria. Raw animal foods are NOT safer or healthier, they are DEADLY. I know. I've spent 20 years as a food safety professional. But don't just take my word for it. Every respected public health authority in the U.S. - CDC, FDA, USDA - will tell you this. Try doing a search on their websites using the terms 'raw milk', 'raw oysters', or 'raw eggs'. Following Ms. Alt's advice could kill you!

    More than just Raw-Curious!

After doing lots of research on my own, I chose this book as my first Raw book purchase. As a mother of two, I hardly have enough time to do any recreational reading, but was thoroughly pleased with this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who is raw-curious. I couldn't put the book down! Very informative, this book provides lots of informative definitions, offers references and resources, and isn't overloaded with recipes. I especially loved the comparisons and suggestions of necessary equiptment for beginners, and many restaurant suggestions. The chattiness of the author was inviting, and made the reading more interesting. I was further surprised to find my nutritionist mentioned in the book! I've already passed this onto my sister and she loves it too!

    Not the worst but ...

This book was a brave first effort. There were some very good parts tucked in here and there. But on the whole, it tended to labor along. The namedropping, the frequent references to the supermodel lifestyle,to the lower Manhattan apartment, etc did not foster any feeling of connection w/ the author for me, average American. I think that the editor let her down. The editor didn't trim off any of the ramble which would have infinitely increased the readablity of the book.

    This really makes sense!

As a nutritionist, I've been following Dr. Gonzalez's work for years and am thrilled that we can finally buy a book (he wrote the forward)that explains his protocol. This is not a trend. The doctor is brilliant and he makes complete sense of all this raw food stuff. Maybe we can get him to write his own book?!! Overall, I found Carol's book a great intro to raw foods as the recipes and food finders guide are quite helpful. Eating raw is really easy and Carol helps show you the way. Thank you Carol and Dr. Gonzalez for helping us all be smarter and putting us on our road to leading healthier lives whether we just want to lose weight, look younger or cure cancer.

    A great book!

This is the first raw food book I read and it's still my favorite. It's a great begginners guide letting you know what to look for on the labels to know which foods are raw and gives you tips and places you can shop, restraunts, and online places to shop for the stuff. If you have been a raw foodist for a while you will probably already know most of the information in here but if you are a beginner you'll learn a lot it's inspired me and helped me very much

A good starter guide to the raw food lifestyle

I liked that she covered most of the bases, but didn't get fanatical about raw foodism. Not everyone wants to eat all raw all of the time, and she understands that and doesn't get preachy. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    From a nurse's perspective...

As a nurse holding a Bachelor's degree this book was somewhat vague and failed to capture the scientific evidence that goes along with eating raw. For example, it did not explain the nutritional benefits of raw milk (products) versus organic milk (products) in a way that would convince me to drive 40 miles for raw milk. Also, redundance was a major source of my disappointment. I read the whole book through (thirsty for knowledge) and I left with a somewhat bland introduction of raw eating and a bunch of supermodel know-how and 'my boyfried the hockey player' information that I don't need. I wish I had previewed the book in a bookstore before buying it online. Also, the recipes are far too sparse to result in any serious intervention. Perhaps Dr. Roth should have written a bit more than the first 5 pages, and then brought a nutritionist in to handle the dietary recipes. Overall, I see this book as one that has been written by a supermodel when the subject of eating raw should have been written by a medical doctor and nutritionist. My fault for not thinking of this earlier!

    A Lifesaver for Good Health

I had no clue about eating raw foods, but Carol's book introduced me to a way of life that is quite easy to follow. The book is very easy to read and full of vital information about eating correctly. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Great Beginners Guide to Eating Raw

I really enjoyed Carol's book. She explains concepts such as sprouting and germinating. She encourages that you do not have to be 100% raw to be healthy and recommends foods like sprouted breads and certain cereals. This book helped me to get started on a raw food diet, but now I am ready for 100% Raw recipes including those that use my dehydrator.
