Overview

In April 2003 Patt Levine underwent "Lap-Band" gastric surgery, one of the primary bariatric surgeries being widely practiced today. As a lifelong foodie, she was expecting the worst when her surgeon's nutritionist handed her dietary guidelines to follow post-surgery, and she was right. With her decades of cooking skills, she immediately set out to devise low-fat dishes that would be just as delicious pureed and chopped as they would be served whole. As an added problem, she wanted to cook for her husband at the same time. This first-ever cookbook for the hundreds of thousands who are lining up for bariatric bypass surgery is proof that it can be done. With collaborator Michele Bontempo-Saray, the author has created 125 recipes that contain no added sugar, are very low in fat, and get their carbohydrates almost exclusively from fruits and vegetables. Each recipe includes specific guidelines for preparation of the dish for every stage of the eating programs for Lap-Band, gastric bypass, and Biliopancreatric Diversion Duodenal Switch (BPD-DS) patients, as well as suggestions for sharing meals with those who have not gone through gastric surgery. Creative recipes cover every meal and food—breakfast and brunch, soups, vegetables, main courses, and sweet indulgences.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Levine, a writer with credits in Gourmet Magazine, underwent bariatric surgery in 2003. Using her cooking skills, she developed recipes that can be pur ed for the immediate postoperative weeks and even served to the rest of the family with no loss of visual or taste appeal. Regardless of type, the surgery results in severely restricted intake and absorption, thus a diet proportionately high in nutrients, especially protein. Levine's recipes are all low-fat but with enough flavor to be tasty even after pur eing. Each recipe provides serving guidelines for appropriate amounts both for the patient and for those in the household who eat normally. In addition, the first chapters describe the types of surgery available and provide nutritional information for bariatric patients and general tips for getting along after surgery. Also worthwhile for anyone on a weight-loss diet, this is highly recommended for public libraries.--Susan B. Hagloch, formerly with Tuscarawas Cty. I love this book!

I had gastric bypass surgery in October, 2008. I quickly got bored with the food I was allowed to eat as I am not a cook and have no business being in a kitchen. I decided I had better learn to cook, so I searched for cookbooks tailored to the bariatric patient. I came up with a few, but this was the only book in plain English with normal ingredients. These are every day recipes using ingredients you probably already have. I had to go shopping because as I said, I am not a cook (at least I wasn't!) but was able to find what I needed in the regular grocery store. I am happy to report that I CAN cook now, and pretty well at that. The recipes are easy to follow and delicious. I've shared what I've made with friends and family and they can't believe these are healthy recipes. The book breaks down how many grams of protein, fat, etc. per serving for each recipe. It also has a section that tells you what you should stock in your pantry to make everything in the book. I am no longer afraid to invite people over for dinner because I know I can provide a delicious and healthy meal for them. I haven't been disappointed in any of the recipes. It's also nice because most recipes only make four servings (the author says they can be doubled or tripled) so instead of making a huge pan of lasagna for the two of us, I can make just enough. I highly recommend the Un-Pasta Lasagna! If I can make these meals, ANYONE can make them. They're that easy!!!

    Great Food

I have Lap Band surgery a month ago and this book is a breath of fresh air. I made the ham and cheese omelet this morning and it was awesome. It actually made 4 servings which is perfect. After cooking it I measured out 3 oz. to eat for breakfast and placed the remaining omelet in a Tupperware container to eat fot breakfast later. I was able to get my protein and calcium all in one meal however next time I think I will add mushrooms to make sure I get some vegetables in. Its great because now my breakfast is prepared for the rest of the week. Can't wait to try something else!!

    Really great

This book has been very helpful with meal planning. I have not had the surgery yet, however, my freezer is stocked with delicious soups for my first few weeks.

    Fantastic compendium

I found this book to be fantastic! I had weight loss surgery a number of years ago and while I made progress, I knew that I was not eating right, but no one could really provide me with any good recipes to assist me. I found this book and it opened up a whole new world of creative ideas for me to use in the kitchen!
I would highly recommend this to anyone who is considering weight loss surgery. I would even go so far as to say the physicians performing weight loss surgery should include this in the follow up information they provide their patients!
