Throwing caution to the wind, he opened his mouth to speak. "I know how you feel--" "No you don't." --and why you're upset, but consider, for a moment, our viewpoint on the situation." Crowley waited for an explosive remark, but none came. He took that as a good sign. "Halt tells me you sent Silvia on a training exercise to touch her knife to each collar of a famer's family without being noticed. You were thinking to increase her skill level, but did you ever wonder how the farmers might react?" No reply. Yet. "It's dangerous. If she continues doing things like that, she could get the wrong ideas and start using them to do the total opposite of a Ranger's job. We simply can't take that risk, Alessandra. Rangers are too valuable to the kingdom. The wrong training could influence her ro make bad choices in the field. And we don't want that, do we?" He allowed the message to sink in bedore he added, "We're not 'taking' her in the way that you're thinking of. All we're doing is shifting her to a new mentor who can give her proper training." Alessandra crossed her arms against her chest and suspiously raised an eyebrow. "And that is...?" "Halt," Crowley said, nodding to the grim grey-bearded Ranger beside him. Alessandra's face drained of color. Her eyes hardened and she recoiled as if she'd been slapped. "What did you say?" There was a dangerous tone in her voice that Crowley would have done well to recognize, but he gave no sign of noticing it. "Halt will be Silvia's new mentor," he continued, "and it'll be good for her. You'll be allowed to visit, of course, just not that often. Look, she will be in good care, it's not like Halt's going to yell at her all day and make hee work until she falls. Silvia needs a brea--" After ten seconds of listening to this, Alessandra was on him. Her knife was drawn and before Halt or Crowley knew it, she'd sent it arching through the air to plant itself in Crowley's leg. He cried out and stumbled, momentarily losing his balance, which was all Alessandra needed. She lunged and grabbed him, kicking him and raining blows to hia face. Silvia shrank back, suprised and a little frightened of het sister's suprise attack. Halt ran to Crowley's aide, desperately trying to pull Alessandra away. The female Ranger was screaming horrible, terrible things, knocking the breath out of her Commandmant, who was defenseless to this assault. Strong, steel arms forced her to stop as they locked around her own arms. She twisted and pulled, but couldn't seem to break away. Suddenly she looked up and spotted her apprentice, standing off to the side, half-hidden in the shadows. "Silvia, run!" she cried. "Go!" But Silvia stood there, frozen. "What about you?!" she choked out. "I'll be okay," came the reply. "You have to leave! Go, get out, away from here! Now! I'll find you, Silvia! I promise! Now, get!" It was those final words that goaded her into action. All those years of running and slinking around in the city will finally come in handy, she thought, as she met her mentor's eyes one last time, nodded once, and darted away. Alessandra watched her go, willing her safely out of harm's way. Then she felt the familiar pressure of metal at her neck, and Halt's cold, soft-spoken voice whispering in her ear, "That's quite enough, don't you think?" She said nothing, standing motionless, her chest heaving, fully aware of the saxe knife at her throat. She wasn't a fool. She knew Halt could kill her. Right here. Right now.
