Overview

The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K. but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that such success was no fluke. Certainly, Echo uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Europop and modern American R&B. As opposed to the often stuffy Spirit, this is proudly modern music where the overall sound matters more than what's being sung. Which isn't to say that Lewis doesn't sing brilliantly on Echo; in fact, there's nary an ounce of diva in Lewis -- she seems to enjoy singing for the sake of it, which is what keeps Echo interesting.

Editorial Reviews

New York Times - Nate Chinen
Vocal heroism is Ms. Lewis’s game, and she plays it ruthlessly, with an unselfconscious gusto evocative of classic Whitney Houston or Celine Dion. “Echo” succeeds best as a showcase for her extravagant instrument, with tidal upwellings of emotion. The album’s basic aesthetic harks to the 1990s, right down to a hidden track: “Stone Hearts and Hand Grenades,” by Julian Bunetta and Andrew Frampton.

Leona is very talented and is blessed with a terrific voice. Just like her first album I enjoyed this one very much, it's rhythmic and classy. This should become another international blockbuster!

Echo is completely different than Spirit (Leona's debut album). Echo is much more real and features some amazing LIVE instruments! Lewis also shines with stronger vocals and more self-written songs than on her previous record. If you enjoyed Spirit or enjoy amazing vocals, with guitar driven beats this is an AMAZING album! Leona even experiments with a previously untouched genre, DANCE...resulting with the EPIC track, Outta My Head. A GREAT HIT!
