Overview

For at least one member of the Greatest Generation, World War II and its aftermath fueled bittersweet memories in the midst of a long and dangerous Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. When the walls collapsed in November 1989, the author inherited a special kind of freedom—that of his seeing his German born son for the first time in 43 years. The two had corresponded over the years, he and his mother from Soviet occupied East Germany, the father from 6,000 miles away. They met in the US in February 1990. Visits with the son followed from the US to Chemnitz, Germany, and all seemed normal among family in America (wife and son) and the Fenger family and grandchildren over there. The harmony soon evaporated, in a conflict of allegiance, pushing the father to an agonizing crossroads of conscience.
