VOYA - Dotsy Harland
Fourteen-year-old Reggie King and his younger brother, Jeremy, are terrified of their mother's abusive boyfriend, Asa. As a way of coping, they lose themselves in the world of online gaming, where Reggie has become a master at the notoriously difficult Echo's Revenge. Reggie is thrilled when he receives a letter from AAA Reality Games, the creator of Echo's Revenge, asking him to participate in a focus group for a new game that is in development. When Asa refuses to give him permission to go, Reggie secretly attends the meeting anyway. Asa finds out, and in order to escape his fury, Reggie and Jeremy leave their home in Washington and head for the safety of their father's house in Pasadena. After a strange and harrowing journey, just as they arrive on their dad's doorstep, they are kidnapped by Echo, the dangerous monster from Echo's Revenge, who has escaped from cyberspace into reality. Echo imprisons Reggie and Jeremy in a trillium crystal mine deep underground with other captured gamers, where they are forced to labor until they figure out a way to disable the monster and set the group free. Austin's first novel of the Echo Hunt series starts off with a bang, containing no shortage of adventure, suspense, and imagination. Although the plot becomes overly drawn out in places and it is difficult to connect with any of the secondary characters, this is a solid beginning to an enjoyable series for younger readers. Kudos to Sean Austin for a young adult page turner.

Reviewed by Karen P. for Readers Favorite "Echo's Revenge; The Ultimate Game" is an action-filled and fast-paced adventure for young adult readers. Boys in particular will relate to the well-defined characters and the urge to jump into various character roles. Brothers Jeremy and Reggie are in a fractured family situation in which an emotionally absent mother and an abusive boyfriend drive the boys to the brink of escaping. Finally, after Reggie visits a gaming business and is asked to give advice, the boyfriend begins to abuse the boys again and they elect to leave the family home in Oregon, hoping to hitch ride to their father's home in California. Along the way, the boys are picked up (just at the moment they really need a ride) by a series of seemingly unsavory drivers who turn out to be wise advice-givers. When the boys are finally captured and taken into slavery by a huge machine named Echo, the advice of the drivers helps to extricate them from certain death. The gaming has come to life and the children are fighting to survive. The characters of the children involved are all well-developed such that both male and female readers will identify with the given personality characteristics. Despite the fact that they are seemingly vacant "gamers," the children all have stories to tell and lessons to learn. In the end, they all mature, having had to face their own worst fears and make the best of a situation which appears totally out of hand. Kudos to Sean Austin for a young adult page turner.

    Scary Book for Gamers

I thought "Echo's Revenge: The Ultimate Game" was an amazing book. It is genuine in every way. This is a must read for anybody who likes science fiction, comedy, adventure, and horror. This would also be a good book to read if you are a gamer. It is about an online game that turns real and the game predator, ECHO, starts rampaging. At first I thought the book would not be o scary or interesting, but ECHO is a half demonic, half human creature that kidnaps all the best gamers in the game. The story of the 2 brothers, Reggie and Jeremy, was really heartwarming. A must read for gamers.
